On this new AMD 2700 I just built I had a box CPU with AMD fan and everything. I just removed it and put on a Vantech Aeroflow with Artic Silver (the AMD fan had a thermal pad) and now my 100% load temperatures have dropped from 51C to 33C. Man what a difference, looks like time for a little over clocking now.

The thermal pastes make a much better conductive contact than a pad ever could.
That's an impressive temperature drop. ;D

For some strange reason AMD doesn't reccommend thermal paste. Their stock fan came with the pad already applied. It's been 24 hours now and the temp is still holding at 33C.

Maybe it's because the paste has to be properly applied. A bad application would be worse than nothing, and could fry the cpu.
I've heard it can deteriorate over time, but so does everything else.

Just put a little rubbing alcohol on the pad and it will dissolve in front of your eyes.

That's the one, they're not cheap but they work good and are quiet. Ya get what ya pay for. $28 isn't much to protect a 2 or 3 hundred processor.

my processor was only 90 bucks but I'm considering it......might try a cheaper one with a 120 mm fan for the front...I already have Arctic Silver and don't need to buy it twice...I dunno shipping is prohibitive...... BTW, what happened to this thread ? said only two posts...

I read the reason AMD dont want you using Paste is because there are circuits on the upper surface of the AMD CPU and you can short them out of you use paste that is electrically conductive. I'm just in the process of buying some ceramique paste as its got really good reviews.

I read in overclockers forums that's just about all they use. Must be the best. My Artic Silver came with the heat sink. Some people talk about reapplying it every 3 months or so. I don't understand how the stuff can stop working, maybe it dries up after time.
