equal time for the "goat-ropers"
Old Henry had spent his entire life living the solitary life as a shepard in the high ranges of Montana. It had been a lonely and rigorous life, without much in the way of "social diversion" (if ya catch my drift), but he had made the best of it as well as he could. His only friends were his dog and his herd of sheep! A lonely existance indeed!
After many years he had got in the habit of going up to one of the local mountain ridges that faced to the west, there him and his faithful border collie and sheep would daily watch the sun setting on the horizon to herald the end of another hard day.
The only note of discord in his life during these daily rituals was that every time he got within arm's reach of one of the sheep his dog would throw his hackles up, utter a deep-throated growl and bare his teeth in a very menacing manner! Of all the darn consternations! No matter what he did the dog refused to share his master in these special moments! He finally figured that he would have to live with that though (no figuring them dogs!).
One day in the late fall, as they were all in the high meadow, Ol' Henry saw a small plane flying overhead. As it approached, the plane suddenly lost power, plunged toward the ground and ended up nose-first in the far part of the meadow! Dashing over Henry pulled the most beautiful young lady he had ever seen out from the wreckage! He took the unconsious lady to his humble cabin and proceeded over the next 6 months to nurse her back to health during the long, cold Montana winter.
During this time, Henry grew very fond of her and strived to earn her trust in every way! Fondness and trust were soon slowly returned...
As spring broke and the snow melted, it soon became time to renew the sunset ritual. This time though the stranded beauty also accompanied the shepard, his collie, and the sheep.
They all sat and watched as the sun dipped toward the horizon. Faithful dog on one arm, the beauty on the other, and the sheep grazing peacefully a few feet away. As the sun met the western horizon Henry looked deeply into her eyes, leaned over and whispered softly in her ear:
"My dear, could you.... would you.... if I may beg of you dear...
....take the damn dog for a walk!"
