okay donna...here it is. still having a problem with connecting to sites. not a problem with my dial up, just sitting there spinning the little world. If I run Neo-trace I access the net instantly. but the one thing I have noticed is that my swap file is all messed up. the min. is a negative number and when I run Norton defrag there is alwaysa re-arrangement of the swap file. how do I manually set the swap file parameters? been fussing here with that question but i can't figure where to go to do it. running 98 se with 256 ram and a 1.5 gig processor on a MSI K7T266 Pro MB (i know...too much 'puter for a kid like me to play with)

it seems the VM is set okay: min 0, max none, with windows managing. doesnt explain that negative min that "pit" says I have.
I'm soooooooooooo confused.....(but that is normal for me!)

I would just set it to let windows manage my virtual memory. That's where I had mine set for years with no problems. As for the test showing negative numbers, that's probably just a fluke in their testing system.

hallelujah!!!I think I've licked it! when I got to looking I realized that I wasn't getting that little notice "opening page...blah, blah blah" in the bottom left. That told me the problem was in IE, not connection related. tried to repair IE, no luck. So I downloaded Opera and while using it the problem wasn't there. So either my IE is corrupt or there is a software conflict somewhere. I will continue to use Opera until I can delete and reinstall IE6. That will be the moment of truth. As far as Opera goes: I had a dickens of a time getting it to manage cookies right (it still isnt right ), the download is VERY choppy and slower, tends to drop-out some site graphics, and i can't use PCPitsop tests . It isnt as slick of a brower as IE and not as user friendly, but who am I to complain!?? I just wish it would allow me to drag/create a shortcut to my desktop but it isnt going to! It does have some neat stuff that IE doesn't have though! It is just going to take me a while to figure out how to use them without buggering something up. ;D As soon as I take care of that "ad" problem I might actually use it 50/50% with a "functional" IE6!

I use Mozilla here, Opera at the Pit and IE wherever the site was coded by an idiot, sometimes all three together. Half the fun of using Opera is that it's NOT IE ! My Opera is set to accept cookies (for ease of use) but to reject third-party cookies. That way I'm getting the necessary site cookies (which I periodically clear) It also rejects all pop-ups so I never see any. I don't see any in Mozilla either. In IE I used to work up a sweat cancelling stuff. ;D

moon, I am right now in the process of downloading mozilla. After I get a feel for it I will be back with my impressions. Maybe we can get a hummer of a string going about the 3 browsers. As of now, Opera doesn't impress me all that much, so it will be interesting to see how Mozilla stacks up. I use Pop-up Stopper because it lets me know when one goes by (some sites use pop-ups for maps and additional info) and allows me to do real time over-ride, so a pop-up stopper feature in the browser is more of a pest than a helper. ( add on: I LIKE Mozilla!!! Fast and Friendly: so far Once you learn to navigate it) hmmmmm more add-on: there is NO contest so far..... I might like this better than IE....and that is scary! ...there seems to be be a prob w/ HTML (ie: bold, ital, etc in posting but not sure yet why the cause)
