Having looked into Vopt, jv16, and McAfee's Quikclean, I am now looking at a program called Disckeeper to solve my unhappiness with Windows utilities. (Even after I install an additional harddrive I am going to have to have some sort of utility to clean and defrag.) Does anyone have any opinion/experience with this one (Disckeeper)??
By the way, when I try ( I'm on W2KPro) using drive C>properties>tools>disk check, and try to fix file errors, it gives me an error saying it doesn't have exclusive access to my drive. I have tried closing all and rebooting to no avail, so I figure it must be something running in the background. Any suggestions??

I use diskeeper at home & work, it's the best defrag that I've come across. have you tried running the www.pcpitstop.com test? you could post the results link back here.

I would also partition my hard drive into smaller sections.

Disk keeper and Fix it Utilities are the best defrags there are.
Fix it Utils is probably better only because it also optimizes your progs with the frequency you use them making for less seek time.
I didn't see your partition tables in this thread, so can't comment on that part.
Edit:
I just saw you had a 40 gig HD.
IMO, you don't have to have more than 2 partitions on it.

looks like you need to enable dma...
the norton speed disk is probably the cause of your access problem.

OK.......what is it and how do I enable it? Donna - I'm going to wait on doing anything with partitioning - I have some help coming (for the installation of the 40GB drive) and want some more experience around when I do that I know, I'm chicken but I can't afford a crashed computer right now.

Disk Keeper is Great!!! i use it on all of my systems at home..XP, 2KServer, ME. I also have it loaded on my USB flash drive, that i carry around at work! if i get a call for a box that's got performance problems, I just plug in my USB drive, load Disk Keeper and analyze the drive. works grreat on those NT 4.0 boxes that the system admins say don't need defrag because of LBA .... bullshit! haha i got the proof! adam

i liked "fix-it" but ended up dumping it because ya can't disable it from the start-up routine. If I cant control it, I definately don't want it on my 'puter. my 'puter, my control. if software cant deal with that: hasta la bye-bye

mine was a un- "condonable" paid version, but like I said it was a start-up bogart with no way to disable, other than that the full-meal-deal was a pleasure to deal with. some excelant options.
