better have your pile of up-to-date drivers handy!
(on reboot, the OS will use its own supplied drivers, which might be several years old, or not even there)
but it is a great "purge and clean" technique!

Doesn't do anything to drivers loren, you just remove the devices and let windows reinstall them. All drivers will remain intact.

okay...but everytime I have done a re-install of hardware, the OS has:
1. detected new hardware 2. searched for drivers 3. opted for drivers from the OS database, unless you direct it to search otherwise.
I do not think I am wrong here and will not yet retract my statement. It might be "true" for some OS's but not for 98SE or 2K, but I VERY much doubt it. I think you are wrong here ( I do allow that I might be wrong too). The Un-installation of the hardware also unassociates (or deletes) the drivers. If the drivers just sit there having 'filet mignon and a good Medoc.... golly good of you to join us again...care for a glass of sherry?' with the OS while I delete, then reinstall the hardware (via the method you described), it has never happened to me. If only that were true, this game would be MUCH simpler.
(god.... I hate it when you keep me on my toes! keep up the good work Ed1)

You only remove devices that aren't listed in safe mode therefore all of you video and sound, etc don't get removed. CDRW and assoc drives use native support anyway. You're not unplugging any cards so the OS won't recognize anything as new. Basically it helps clean up your IRQ's mainly.

OK, I'm up for that because I've just picked up a magazine with a cover CD containing ' Five hundred latest upgrades and drivers for hardware' ( PC Answers, December Isue, UK peeps) I'll let it ride for a couple of days though as I'm just starting to put my new rig together. PS. Everything is fine in Safe Mode so I think it's a driver issue, something loading with Windows. Mouse is on the case at the Pit and she thinks so too.

not to confuse the issue to much but i just remembered an instance similar to what your talking about moon, i back tracked and found that the last thing i installed was a mouse (couldnt be that i thought) so i ignored it tried everything else and then came back to the mouse installation. It was a cordless mouse but i'd let windows pick the drivers and it worked fine, so what could be the problem hmmmmm, so i thought ok i'll install the drivers that come withit (but i knew it wouldnt make a difference to my HD hanging) so i installs the mouse drivers and guess what no more hard drive hanging, how strange is that! the only thing i could think of was that there must have been some sort of sharing going on thataffected the hard drive, but to this day i'm not sure. hope this doesnt confuse the issue. good luck moon hope ya find the problem soon, it drives me nuts when i have a persistent problem and i cant find the answer, so i know how ya feel.

Funny you should say that, trev, because a chap at another forum was asking me if I had Logitech drivers installed ( I do, or at least I'm in the same position as you- they were and I'm still using the mouse. ) I'll check that now and reinstall them if necessary.
EDIT; Hey,hey- Windows mouse drivers. I'll look for my disc. Mind you, I'm fine in Safe Mode, mouse and all.
