This may have been ask before...but I am in need of a fast answer. My boss has been using his new computer for about 2 months now, all of which has been fine. When he starts up each morning, he gets the startup music, his desktop and icons. Now the problem. This morning, when he turned on his computer, the login box appears wanting a password for his name. He has not ever set this up or anything. He has never used a password to log on. Why is it wanting one now?. How do we get rid of this. Can't do anything without a password! Help please

Everything I oculd find wants you to buy software. Just as a dumb question what happens if you hit enter leaving the password blank,
Found this at MS site, but there ought to be someway around it.
If a user password is lost, forgotten, or unknown, the only method to reset the password is for the administrator (or a user with administrative access) to log on and reset the password in Computer Management. There is no method in the Windows 2000 security model to bypass, disable, or reset the password.
If the administrator password is lost, forgotten, or unknown, access to the computer may not be obtainable and the operating system may need to be reinstalled.

Donna, we can't log in as anything.....it won't let us. I think he may have picked up a trojan from the internet, or as a reply from another forum , the auto log on feature quit working. We have tryed to get the to the recovery console to delete the password but that don't work either. Ed1, we have tryed everything we can think of but nothing works. Computer company that set it up says that they never set a password for anything! That is left up to us! Boss hasn't set one up either! Don't know why it's asking for one now!

Thanks for all the help, but the only solution from Microsoft is to re-install OS. Bummer...Boss will loose all his files.

For $150 you can buy a disk that will fix that. Buy another HDD for the reinstall then you can connect old HDD as slave and still get data files.

Hey guys, I know this is an old post but I thought I would let everyone know how we resolved this problem. After trying every suggestion short of reformatting, we decided to re-install the OS over top of the existing one. You may already know this but during the re-install, there is an option to keep the existing files intact! PERFECT! Boss didn't loose his stuff and all is happy now. Again thanks for all your help!
