If you are using a router, I found that things will work with less lag if you go to a command prompt and run "ipconfig /all" and manually enter IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server addresses, into the "local area connection properties" under the "internet protocal(TCP/IP) bound to your NIC. This especially applies to Windows 2000, XP. Every few minutes windows will send out a request to verify these numbers, naturally if you're trying to surf at the same time quess who request has priority.
