I've just won a PC for my local Conservation group through BT Community Connections scheme. ( Very useful, if you're connected in any way to any non-profit community group) Anyway, it's got XP preloaded ( ) and a recovery disc. I haven't switched it on yet but I'm looking up the road and wondering what I'm going to do when the OS needs a reinstall. Can I copy the entire, pristine, drive to an external hard drive and use that copy to reinstall in future ? What other alternatives are there ?

yes you can, but you need some software help like Drive Image by powerquest or norton ghost. there's also other software out there like Aloha Bob that connects 2 PC's and transfers data from one pc to another. If it were me, since your recovery cd will have a cd key, i'd ask someone to burn you a copy of xp and use your cd key from the recovery disk. you'll still have to activate it though. also bear in mind, i don't know for sure if the cd keys are different for OEMs and Windows CDs.

Cheers, mega. I've 'found' a copy of Drive Image so I'll ask around about the OEM/Windows key thang before I get an external H-drive.
