OK, I know I've impressed you all with my extensive knowledge of all things PC but I don't know anything about commands or DOS. Don't ask how I've managed to stay online for three years. Anyway, I've got a machine here, 98SE, that boots through Windows and then stops at 'Explorer has performed an illegal operation'. How do I recover from that ? I've got a startup disc and I've been staring at a blinking A prompt for two hours wondering what to do next. What do I do next ?

No worries, sorted it myself. Blind faith and clear conscience. I'd like to know a few commands though. 'Get in there, you ba87**rd,' doesn't always work. ;D

hey moon!, i'm not that great with 98, but can you boot into safe mode and check the basics? hardware conflicts... check the event log to see what the error is...if it was me, i'd back up to CDRW, and re-image the drive! might be the best bet if you can't find the problem. good luck Adam

When I was running win98SE, every couple of weeks, I'd get pissed and open in dos, and type in "format C: /u " that showed it who had the switch!

Powerchucker, I couldn't get into safe mode. I got the same message there too. I has to re-install over the existing from the A prompt. ( E:\Win98\Setup ) Luckily, it cured the problem and left all my settings intact. Useful links ed1, cheers.
