ok i thought we should take it in turns to start at least one new topic a day and everyone has to post at least one comment in them, so i'll start with this topic and someone else must start a new topic tomorrow. right i have at least 3 pc's.. my main pc(in living room connected to main 32" tv) which runs 24/7 is used for folding ( my stats:- folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=161913 ) this is also my media centre(pvr) and server, my videos are stored on it, and there are 3 tv tuners in it too, which record all my tv programs(2xitb drives and need a 3rd), along with all my music(about 14gb) i also use this pc for skype and web browsing sometimes along with the one in my bedroom.. my other 2 pc's are used in the bedrooms to access the main pc to watch the tv content and browse the web. the one in my bedroom is connected to dual monitors so i can watch mythtv(tv server from main pc) on one and chat on skype and surf the web on the other. all my pc's use linux operating system but i may put virtual windows operating systems back on the 2 in the bedrooms, for games. now i don't consider myself an advanced pc user even tho i do seem to use my pc's for more than just web browsing, i have very little experience with actually doing things like music or video editing, printing, word processing, etc, etc, everything my pc's do is all automated and needs very little/if any input from me once it was setup. i have also been experimenting with things like remote desktop and ftp servers and trying to stream my video/tv collection(with little success and mentioned in another topic, that's still waiting for some responses.:-p) with a couple of friends in the states. well that's what i use my pc for so what about the rest of you?? ;D

That sounds like quite a set up you have terry I have one PC that is our main one. My son has his own one that links into the server for broadband. What do I use it for - watching DVDs, playing games, photo editing, listening to music, work - spreadsheets, databases etc. Browsing the web and chatting with others. beau

Wow Terry! I have 2 PC in the basement. One I can't get onto cause I don't have a password. The other my son uses. I use it sometimes to burn disks on. My main one is a lap top, I use it for surfing. I am a program collector. LOL I down load lots. LOL Hannah has a netbook. She does facebook and MSN. We don't do much with our computers anymore.

I have 5 PC's. Three Desktops and Two lappies. I really only use two of them but when your a computer geek you always have working backups around. ;D The two desktops get used for internet surfing, DVD Authoring and burning and the laptop gets use for portability purposes. One of the Desktops is a dual boot machine with Win XP and Linux, the other desktop is Win XP and the Lappies are Win Vista and Win XP.

I have two main ones that I use. One is a Touch AMD desktop, on which I’m running Win XP. I use it for writing, watching streaming videos, listening to the sweet sounds of CBC Jazz, watching TV episodes, etc. I don’t do much gaming.
I will run a Puppy Linux Livecd, but won’t install Linux as it runs quite well as a Livecd, saving data to the hard drive, and that takes up less room than if I dual booted the system. Also, I just don’t feel like jumping through the hoops needed to get my printer working under Linux, especially as there are no Linux drivers for the thing.
I also use it to work on Speakpup, a project that has sputtered to a stop in the past few years, but I’m getting back into it. Speakpup, if it works, will be a small Linux distro that could be used by a near blind / totally blind user. Not as the main system, but something portable that could be carried on vacations, etc, and booted from a Livecd or Usb stick. Portable and free.
I also have a Dell Laptop, and can often, in the AM, be found in a local coffee shop tapping away at my current writing project. It runs Vista Home Basic 64 bit version. I could run Puppy Linux on it, but don’t.
Other computers in the house. Mom has two. An Acer, not much better than a netbook, desktop which runs Win XP, on which she plays online Bingo, does email, and other games. She also has a laptop, an eMachine running Vista Home Basic, which she takes on holidays. To play online bingo, email, and other games.

I have my main pc I use for research, burning VHS to DVD and burning music, regular surfing and making on line pruchases. Brenda has a pc I built for her, she does mostly school work (remote desktop connection to the schools server) I also have a test rig that I try out software with and a netbook so Brenda can use for showing utube vids and power point presentations on her projector in her class room. I also have another laptop that someone gave with a broken screen. I got a new screen in it and installed xp on it, but I still have the orginal vista restore disks for it, I tried to sell it on Craigs List but only got spammed. I have a couple other older pc's I manage to always have around and every summer I donate them to the church garage sale

yes it does sound like a great setup i have but to be honest i think it sounds better than it is.. wasn't hard to create either mythtv does all the work but i am proud of my main pc which i built and is a watercooled i7 920. ;D
i see most of you do a lot more with a pc than i do tho, including using them for work. it also sounds like you all have more actual technical ability/experience and use a wider range of programs than me, especially when it comes to things like data manipulation of some type, editing, documents, ect, not that i couldn't learn i suppose. lmao.
i keep saying i'm going to get more into video editing/encoding so i can shrink my tv recordings or put them onto dvd's but i never seem to get around to it, and just keep deleting them when i've watched them.
you all seem to have at least 2 working pc's so do you all have them setup so you can access your data(video, music, etc) from whatever pc your using? or do you just use a usb stick to move files from pc to pc? only my tv recordings can be accessed from any pc at the moment, but at one time i did have all my media available to any pc(should set back up but haven't done yet)
i'm actually surprised the number of you that use a linux os in some way or another too.
joe that's another thing i keep meaning to do but haven't got around to, putting all my vhs onto the pc then onto dvd maybe, shouldn't be hard to do either seeing how i have the capture cards.
what sort of programs do you collect donna, video's? and how do you access them from your lappy?
trobin that speakpup sounds like a great project, and you have my total respect and best wishes for a successful outcome, but how would it work? is it all voice commands and what sort of thing would it be able to do? i can imagine it being having lots of technical problems knowing what to read aloud from web pages etc but have an easier time say accessing and playing any media files on a pc.

Right now, no it doesn't use voice controls. Nor does it use any windowing system. Boot it up and all you get is a menu and a voice telling you what the options are. From there you get to use simple command line programs to play music, write text, browse the web, using text browsers such as Lynx which seems to have a following with blind users , etc. Espeak, speech dispatcher and yasr reads what's on the screen. I have yet to figure out how to stop it from reading things such as dotted lines, etc.
Input is through a keyboard, though I am including bryltty so that braille input devices can be used.

Non of our pc/laptop are connected. The pc i need to get working is a media center. Once I get into it and see what its got in there I am hoping that is where all my music and movies will be stored and I will set that one up to a TV. Right now I just need to get the password so I can log on. ;D

I have three desktop pc's, all running folding (5 clients), and terry still kicks my ass. I have a laptop upstairs my wife and I use for facebook--me for facebook bejeweled. I'm heavily addicted I surf the web a lot with my main pc and copy cd's and dvd's. I've never been real good at linking them together. I consider it lucky if I can get them all to print to one printer. People give me stuff all the time, mostly crap/too old before I get it. I love to build stuff and update. I took about 10 of the old style monitors to Best Buy for recycling--you give them $10 for it, and they give you a $10 gift card. I do have a entry level server I got from my bro-in-law's business. When I get a few spare bucks, I will probably buy a 2 TB drive and use it for a media server. I would like to have a place for all family members pictures, but I'm starting to think cloud is the way to go. Crap, MS gives away 25 gigs--that should be enough, and I wouldn't have to have a server on all the time. Anyhoo...carry on.

I also bought an Aspire One Acer Netbook, running XP, for a closeout price of $230 from 300, and my youngest daughter saw it and said, ohhh, I like that (and her lappy sucked), so the softy in me gave/sold it to her. Let's see, have I gotten any money from her..... Nope.
