I think Joe hit the nail on the head, as I just sold a emachine computer I repaired and it had all the same symptoms as yours. I had to put a new powers supply and mobo in it as when the psu went it took the mobo out with it.
Luckily I found a new replacement mobo on ebay for $19 or I would have sent it to the trash heap..

A lot of the HP's and comcraps use what they call a "mini" power supply, mostly because that's the only thing that can fit, a standard size will never work, The nice thing about the mini's is that they are really cheap! www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817338031You'll need to check the physical size in order to determine if it a mini or not Another cheap option, go to your local pc store, pick up a psu above the watts you now have and, you can leave the psu outside of the case, just connect the 20/24 pin connector to the motherboard and 4 pin cpu power connector if you have one No need to connect anything else except the keyboard and mouse, .If it posts then keep it and be happy, and install if it'll fit, if it doesn't post then return it to the store and plan on getting the kids another used pc, if it posts but will not fit in the case then order the one from newegg (That's a real good reason to tell your wife that you need a new pc so the kids can have your old one) I'll try this ----- thanks!

;DPeekaboo,
I am here, was busy this week at work so I was to tired to post. I am filling in for the parts person for 2 weeks. Doing up invoices, ordering pars and giving out PO #s is very hard on the brain.
