Company sweetens the pot for Pwn2Own contest
Google is offering security researchers a $20,000 prize for hacking its Chrome web browser.
The company has been named as a special sponsor for the 2011 Pwn2Own contest at the CanSecWest security conference in March.
Sponsored by security firm HP TippingPoint, the annual Pwn2Own contest challenges security researchers to develop and deploy working exploits for web browsers and mobile platforms.
The first researcher to demonstrate an exploit which allows for complete control over the targeted system will not only win a cash prize, but will also walk away with the "owned" device itself. TippingPoint also awards winners points towards its Zero Day Initiative rewards program.
Google's sponsorship will raise the prize for successfully compromising the browser from $15,000 to $20,000 for the first working exploit. The winner will also walk away with a Google CR-48 notebook.
In order to claim the prize, contestants must demonstrate an attack which not only compromises the browser but is also able to escape Chrome's sandbox protections.
In addition to the Google's challenge, the browser portion of the Pwn2Own contest will feature $15,000 rewards for traditional targets Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox.
The mobile portion of the contest will challenge researchers to hack each of the four major smartphone platforms. Contestants can claim a $15,000 prize and free handset by demonstrating a successful hack on a Dell Venue Pro (Windows 7,) iPhone 4 (iOS,) BlackBerry Torch 9800 (BlackBerry 6 OS) or a Google Nexus S (Android.)
